Saint Germain des Prés
The
Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is the oldest church in Paris. Originally – it
was founded in 542 – it was, as its name implies, ‘in the fields’.
It was destroyed by Vikings
(they get everywhere, don’t they?) and their successors the Normans several
times over,
and the
present building was started in 990 in the Romanesque (round-arched) style of
the time.
The Choir was
rebuilt in the 12th century, and is Gothic, with pointy arches.
